Asymptote

In this room between now and then,

Before you left and I stayed,

Let the atoms shiver in the void

Between touch and breath, in

The hesitant pause before

Our lives crash into the intersection of

particulate moments.

And the cat is alive.

Let ambiguity live in the asymptote,

On a plot of distance and time we wade against

This curved infinity—searching, searching for

truth in our parting when…

You left on a trajectory I couldn’t follow

as I watched on a linoleum floor,

our lines defined such

that why is a function of externalities

beyond the grasp of unfulfillment.

Let it be the trace

Of who we are, etched into the limits

That we draw in naivete; in a memory of crushed flowers

and yesterday as the wave

collapses into a pinprick of departing light,

so small that it must contain the tremor

of all that we left unsaid
